live births are affected by Neonatal Diabetes

A Diagnosis No Parent Expects
Every day, new parents — especially in the U.S. — are faced with the unexpected reality of neonatal diabetes. As they adjust to life with their newborn, they’re suddenly navigating a rare but serious condition that can become life-threatening if not managed properly. Unlike the more common type 1 diabetes, neonatal diabetes appears within the first six months of life and is caused by a genetic mutation rather than an autoimmune response.
Permanent Neonatal Diabetes
A Story Close to Home
Permanent Neonatal Diabetes is an exceptionally rare form of diabetes that appears in the first few months of life and, unlike its transient counterpart, doesn’t go away. Caused by a genetic mutation rather than an autoimmune trigger, it requires lifelong monitoring and management — often beginning before a child has even taken their first steps.
This project became deeply personal to me after my niece was diagnosed with Permanent Neonatal Diabetes at just a few months old. It was devastating news for my brother and our family — a time filled with fear, uncertainty, and far too many unanswered questions. Watching a newborn endure such a serious condition is something no family is ever prepared for. But thanks to Dexcom, she has been able to stay healthy, active, and thriving at just two years old — living a full life despite the challenges.
As a designer and someone who lived through those early, overwhelming moments, I saw the emotional gap we felt — a lack of easily accessible, reassuring information for parents navigating this rare diagnosis. This campaign is a reflection of that experience: an opportunity to help Dexcom reach more families in those first critical moments, with education, empathy, and support. It’s not about what’s missing — it’s about what more we can do.
